646f9e108c Spearing Salmon is a student film by 13 year old Native American Director, Filmmaker, Annabella Brauker. It takes us on a journey into the politically charged subject of tribal sovereignty expressed through spearfishing rights guaranteed by treaty. Annabella films a family experience with her father and dogsthey travel to Pine Creek near Manistee, Michigan and spear salmon during the fall spawning run. This tribal sustenance activity often comes under attack from violent and vocal opponents from the general state population. Indians are often harassed when participating in their traditional hunting and gathering traditions and so they venture far into the isolated woods to find places to harvest fish. A common bumper sticker from the area reads 'Save a fish, Spear an INDIAN!'
